Corne & Lara – Part One, The Proposal

Sometimes we can't believe that we get to do this job. Tuesday was that time.

Back in February, I got an email from a wedding photographer in Australia named Corne. He said a few of the magic words to me. They included, but were not limited to: Engaged, Wedding, Proposal, Australia, New York City, Surprise and a few others that I'll probably keep to myself. We've been so excited for this. Among the excitement was the added fact that none of us had ever met, so we planned everything out over the phone for the last few months. Here's how it went down...

Corne and Lara came to the states a few days ago to visit some people and then came to NYC so they could see the city. Corne wanted to propose in Central Park, so we figured out where (Gapstow Bride), when (apparently on the hottest day of all time), and how. When the time came, Corne took Lara for a walk and stopped her on the bridge. Amy and I were on either side of the bridge trying to hide our equipment and our walkie talkies. Corne told Lara that he wanted to take a photo, so while she was waiting on the bridge, he set up his tripod. Rather than set up a photo, he put it on video mode and had himself mic'd. Then, as he went to propose, we swooped in. Corne proposed in Afrikaans, the native language of South Africa.

I'm hoping to share the video sometime soon once it's edited... Here's our take... Oh, and coming tomorrow: Part 2 - The Engagement Shoot

  1. geez, how bummed were you that that random guy got in the “down on one knee” shot?? :)

  2. Haha Lauren. Those two people literally had NO CLUE what was happening. I was waiving like a mad men for them to move. It still helps it fell real though I think :)

  3. I agree, the random people are what make it! Though, be nice if they were at least a little further back and weren’t so in focus. Pretty cool anyway!

  4. Thank you so much Tony and Amy! You guys are amazing and we cant explain how happy we are with this set. It is one of the biggest moments in our lives and its just perfect. I agree about it feeling more real (sweat marks and random guy in the background haha)

We have been refreshing the Blog page every minute now and we went crazy when we saw it :-D

    Thanks so much!!!!!

  9. Awesome proposal! Could be a script right out of a movie.

Congratulations Corne and Lara, I hope the rest of your life is as interesting and unconventional as your proposal.

Karen & Zach | A proposal…

Ahem. May I have your attention please... I have an announcement to make. Karen and Zach are engaged! Oh yeah, that's right. I get to make the official announcement here on the blog. Woohoo!

So, here's the scoop for all you wondering eyes. You might remember that I announced the winners to my Shoot Me For FREE!! contest last month. I had two winners who got their photos and stories up and another winner who was nameless, faceless and story-less. Well, turns out that Zach has been preparing to propose to Karen for a while (got the ring in September), so I had the pleasure of helping him plan a small part of it. I usually don't type much so you can just see photos, but here's a bit of narration for all you inquiring minds...

Once Zach won, we started to plan. Zach knew he wanted to do it soon, that ring had been burning a hole through him for long enough. He decided to do it at Valley Forge, somewhere that Karen spends lots of time running and where he could get her without too much lying. We scouted and found a pretty cool spot near the train station. Amy and I arrived early in our best camoflouge....

Ok, so Amy didn't get any pictures of me, but that one's close enough.

We were sneaky, tip-toeing around the building as Zach got Karen into place. Zach, looking much like a ninja, checked to make sure the photographers were in place and waited for some folks to clear out (If you look closely, behind the guy in the red jacket, you'll see Amy's little green hood popping out. We were both convinced Karen saw us)...

Then once the time was right (and a few Boy Scouts and Park Rangers were looking on nearby), Zach popped the question...

She said yes of course. Who wouldn't? It's Zach after all. Karen even acted surprised, even though she was really hoping it would happen that day. Later I decided that it was good Zach asked when he did, otherwise Karen would have started to wonder why he was waiting so long...

Amy's angle...

Zach eventually told Karen that we were there, and off we headed for our first official immediate-engagment session. Here's some photos...
