Jennifer & Loren | Wedding at Riverdale Manor

Happy Apple Announcement Day everyone! I've been getting as much work as possible done before 1pm this afternoon. Like all tech nerds, I'll be glued to my computer listening to every word Steve Jobs says so that I can know how my robot-like brain will be interacting with the world for the next several years. Hopefully you all do the same.

Well, before I go off into Apple-related-hybernation for the next few hours, I want to share this wedding from this past weekend. Amy and I have had the pleasure of spending lots of time in the last few months at our 2 favorite Lancaster spots, The Inn at Leola Village and Riverdale Manor. Jennifer and Loren combined the two (got ready at Leola, had everything else at Riverdale) and left a bunch of time for portraits in the middle. It was a really elegant wedding. Very well planned, which meant for a very stress free and on-schedule day. No running around or extra stress for us. I can't tell you how happy that makes me. Anyway, I love these images. Hope you do too! Don't forget to leave Jennifer and Loren some comments at the bottom. Everyone likes hearing how good they look :)...

Karen & Zach | A proposal…

Ahem. May I have your attention please... I have an announcement to make. Karen and Zach are engaged! Oh yeah, that's right. I get to make the official announcement here on the blog. Woohoo!

So, here's the scoop for all you wondering eyes. You might remember that I announced the winners to my Shoot Me For FREE!! contest last month. I had two winners who got their photos and stories up and another winner who was nameless, faceless and story-less. Well, turns out that Zach has been preparing to propose to Karen for a while (got the ring in September), so I had the pleasure of helping him plan a small part of it. I usually don't type much so you can just see photos, but here's a bit of narration for all you inquiring minds...

Once Zach won, we started to plan. Zach knew he wanted to do it soon, that ring had been burning a hole through him for long enough. He decided to do it at Valley Forge, somewhere that Karen spends lots of time running and where he could get her without too much lying. We scouted and found a pretty cool spot near the train station. Amy and I arrived early in our best camoflouge....

Ok, so Amy didn't get any pictures of me, but that one's close enough.

We were sneaky, tip-toeing around the building as Zach got Karen into place. Zach, looking much like a ninja, checked to make sure the photographers were in place and waited for some folks to clear out (If you look closely, behind the guy in the red jacket, you'll see Amy's little green hood popping out. We were both convinced Karen saw us)...

Then once the time was right (and a few Boy Scouts and Park Rangers were looking on nearby), Zach popped the question...

She said yes of course. Who wouldn't? It's Zach after all. Karen even acted surprised, even though she was really hoping it would happen that day. Later I decided that it was good Zach asked when he did, otherwise Karen would have started to wonder why he was waiting so long...

Amy's angle...

Zach eventually told Karen that we were there, and off we headed for our first official immediate-engagment session. Here's some photos...

  5. Very nice! Excellent captures.

In the second shot, is Amy holding a 135 or 200?

  6. I get this sense that this will start a trend…just like everything else you do :-)

Excellent work. Brilliant idea. I love it :-)

    “Hoffer. Tony Hoffer.”

  12. You two crack me up! I am sad that Rick and I didn’t get to meet Amy she seems like she is so much fun. This is a great idea! We were contacted about shooting a proposal and until then I really didn’t think about the magnitude of photographing something so important. I think you guys did a fantastic job!

  13. What a blast. It’s such a cool honor to be able to be a part of a proposal. Great job with these shots!

Andrea | Portraits

Heyooo! It's Friday, and the start of a wonderfully exciting weekend for us. Hopefully all ya'll had a great week! Yesterday I got a chance to head out and shoot with Andrea, who I photographed last year with her then boyfriend (now fiance) Bill. I've been so thankful for this great weather (at least 'great' for January) lately, so I was so happy to be able to get back while we had the chance. Despite the fact that it wasn't freezing, it still wasn't easy for Andrea to be out there in a dress, so a big internet high-five to her for braving the cold!

Much like shooting Kate the other week, it's remarkable that Andrea has never done this before. You rock girl.

Yeah Yeah Yeah! Sooo jealous. Tony… your fan group grows by the day out in Pittsburgh. Blogstalking is now a past time.

  2. Erin

Oh yeah and Andrea… you look hot too. Favorite one is second to last in the hay.

  3. It was worth it for the dress (then again I wasn’t the one out in the cold) – it really made some of those outdoor shots. I love the one in front of the barn. And hey – if Im not mistaken those are my boots!:) Looks like they’ve gotten into some of your photos before me! Good to say a quick “hey” to you yesterday Tony!

  4. Andrea Ames

AMAZING…as always, Tony!! looks like it was a good decision to grab those shots at the end…everyone seems to love them :) also…i forgot about a 100 year old oak tree thats there…HUGE branches that come down onto the ground, could have had some beautiful shots there..next time =)

  5. Lindsay

    That’s it. I’m starting a Tilt-Shift fund for myself.

  6. I’m with Lindsay, Tilt-Shift fund starts today.

Jenn & Rob’s Engagement at Bear Creek

Yo, yo, yo blog stalkers. It's been a whopping 5 days since I've blogged, which is the longest I've gone without posting in quite a while. Winter time brings some long breaks, especially when it gets freezing cold out. Luckily, winter also brings some pretty unique stuff too, like the chance to combine engagement sessions with snowboards. You're going to find out pretty quickly how fun Jenn & Rob are. If the name sounds familiar, it's because they were one of the winners of my Shoot Me for FREE!! contest last month. This isn't that shoot (that's coming in a few months), but since they're getting married soon we needed to take care of some engagement photos first. They brought their A game. End of story.

Before I go, I need to give a big shout out to Bear Creek Resort (which happens to be awesome) and a HUGE FAIL to Camelback (who is now on our naughty list). Oh, and big thanks to my friend (and former client) Rachel for helping me out for the day. Here's an official congrats to you and Kyle on the marriage, only 3 months late... Enjoy the pics!

New Bags (Yes it’s exciting)!

When you're a small business owner, sometimes it's the little things that get you excited. I have 2 fun little things today. A couple of weeks ago, Amy and I were strolling through the grocery store with our reusable grocery bags, talking about how we needed to buy more gift bags for delivering albums and things like that. That's when the lightbulb flickered and I realized that it was probably a good idea (and much more environmentally friendly) to look into getting some reusable bags myself. So, I researched and found this great California company called 1 Bag at a Time. They were awesome in working with me to get these bags made and are very affordable. Like less than the cost of a large gift bag. If you have a business or just want a bunch of bags for something, check them out!

The other thing I wanted to share is my Formspring page. If you haven't heard of Formspring, it lets you ask anonymous questions to people. I set one up since I often get the same emails from people and photographers. So, feel free to go to Formspring and ask me something (fun questions are better). Before you do, be sure to browse the other answers so you're not repeating. Have a good weekend everybody!

Here's the bags...

  2. Hi there Tony! Really nice bag! For what are you gonna use it? To pack and delivery yours albuns? I have some for my wife school photography business, but made in paper! I’ll gonna try thoses ones!

    Regards and congratulations.

  3. Oh, I love those bags! Such a fun idea :D

Kate | Portraits

There's nothing more exhilerating and tiring than a busy wedding season. On the flip side, there's nothing more boring than sitting in my office catching up during the cold winter. However, winter does allow for a few things I haven't done in months. Namely, checking out some other photographers' work, getting inspired by new ideas, buying (and lusting over) new gear, and having some time to shoot for fun. You'll probably notice a combination of all those things here. I bought some new equipment and needed a test subject. Considering that my other option was my friend Nate in a Speedo, I'd say that I made the right choice.

Thanks to Kate for volunteering to model for me and letting me use their property. It was lots of fun! You wouldn't know it from these photos, but Kate is an amateur. Just volunteered and knocked it out of the park. So, here's something a bit different. Just one camera + one Lens. Hope you like em!...

Oh, and if you get a chance, let me know what you think about this slideshow/gallery as a way to display images. I wanted to throw it out there to you faithful blog stalkers to see which way you'd prefer to stalk. Would you rather scroll through, or have a slideshow/gallery? Let me know in the comments. Thanks!

  1. Excellent images and beautifully post processed.

  2. Emma

    beautiful model+one bada$$ photographer=awesome shoot.

i enjoy the slideshow/gallery…it’s a new year, try something new!
    :o)

  3. Beautiful work Tony. Love the new Blog and the slideshow was a great idea, perfect tempo to the image changes as well. Any slower and I would prefer to scroll.

  4. Very nice. 24TS-E? Stellar work as always and Kate sure did great as well!

As for the slideshow… First, they need to stay up longer. Like another one or two seconds. I know it can also be controlled.. I sorta like having them all listed out, even if it might make your pages very long. I like to scroll through images personally. Probably the biggest disadvantage is that you have to use flash for the slideshow. If someone were to come by on a mobile device, there could be issues.

Otherwise, I think its a very nice player and blends very nicely into your site. Which slideshow player are you using?

  5. What about showing a few of my favorites, then having the rest below in a slideshow?

  6. Love the ones taken outside in the gray dress and adore the last shot with her dog.

  7. I look at far more images when they are all displayed for me to scroll through so I am anti-slideshow. I don’t want to wait for the load time plus I use ClickToFlash because Flash is so poorly done on the Mac so by default I don’t even see the gallery.

    I’m guessing 45 TS/E?

  8. I see you had to ditch ffffff as the bg color of the slideshow as well… mine was turning turquoise. I was told fffffe was closest, you may want to try that. I would say increase the time by .5 sec, it’s a bit fast especially when viewing two verticals together. I also wanted to ask where you got the share buttons underneath, I want to do something like that on my blog. Come over and leave your comment for me, too! :) Cheers, Kristina

  9. Watch out world, Tony got a new toy! I think the ones like #4 where the out of focus areas are used more subtly are strongest. Awesome work as usual.

  10. I prefer to scroll. Looks like you had some fun with the new toy.

  11. Lindsay

Oh, tilt shift. (right?) These are just lovely. The tops of the trees in that one diptych are mesmerizing. What’s interesting is b/c I subscribe to your blog via google reader, they always come out for me to scroll through. The slide show apparently doesn’t translate into Reader. Interesting.

  12. I have the biggest smile on my face! I LOVE the photos of my sissy! I have soooo many favorites.

In regard to the slideshow, I always skip past them on blogs. I am just very impatient and like to be able to scroll through images…

  13. Adrianna DiMartino

She is GORGEOUS!! You are lucky to have such good looking friends ;) As for the slideshow, I think I prefer to scroll through. Great work Tony!

  14. Hey Tony,

This is my first time commenting, but I am always looking for your posts on Fred and get excited when I see your name. I love your style. I have been shooting for a year and have learnt so much from you and others and I want to take that opportunity to thank you for sharing with other artists. I really enjoyed the slide show, sometimes I scroll through pictures too quickly and I miss things. So this way really makes you savour every image.

    Nice!

  15. Andrea

I do like the slideshow, especially if the speed is able to be controlled by the viewer. Great shots & she is beautiful!

My only other question is….why didn’t you choose Nate?? ;)

  16. Vanessa Charles

a really lovely shoot… beautiful images & subject! i prefer to scroll

  17. Beautiful!

    SCROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

  18. you are awesome. Love the slideshow but only saw it on the desktop not on the iphone…..that would be my ONLY complaint….these are just beautiful!

  19. danielle

I had to leave my google reader blog stalking to come post. I was going to say that I wouldn’t be able to view the slideshow on google reader, but all the pictures showed up in my google reader as individual pictures. So now that I’m at your site on my iPhone, i can’t view all the photos. I am not a fan of the slideshows myself. I rarely look at them on other photography blogs.

  20. Resa

Love your work! I prefer to scroll through all of the images. I can’t view them one the iphone with a slideshow. Personally I would like to scroll through all instead of just favorites.

  21. Ruggero

    Beautiful slide…and work. :)

  22. Srolling for me Tony! Keep up the killer work man.

  23. Great slideshow Tony! However, I’d suggest you do the hybrid: favorites in large images and the rest in a slideshow. The reason being that Google will have an easier time finding the images and indexing them when people do a local images-based search.

  24. Emily

    Definitely prefer scroll. Great pictures!

  25. Emil

What a fierce set of photos. Your model is gorgeous…hard to believe she is an amateur!!! I dig a combo of scroll and then slideshow. I have to admit though I rarely sit throw the slideshow on other photogs websites; BUT I do dig this slideshow set up.

  26. Thanks everybody! I guess the conclusion is that everyone likes the photos and hates the slideshow… Hahaha. Noted!

  27. Sarah Bateman

Love them! Particularly numbers 4 & 11 – the light and the color are so brilliant together.
    Georgeous model!

  28. Lisa

Tony! I actually prefer the slideshow. Scrolling is ok but everytime I try to scroll and the pictures aren’t done loading it keeps pushing the page up and I lose my spot! But if you keep it scrolling, I won’t stop stalking so do what you like best! Also, if you’re ever looking to do an experiment shoot like this again and need somebody, let me know. Always nice to update my pictures!

  29. Amy

I know Nate, and I have pictures (and video) of him in that Speedo! You made a good choice.

On another note, here's a quick shout out to 2 wedding blogs who have been hooking me up with some features lately. To you clients of mine, I know how good blogs can be for wasting time, so hop on and find some good ideas. Good details make for good weddings :)

Flush Mount Albums

This post is mostly so I can link it later, but I wanted to show some images and info about the Flush Mount albums we're offering. This is an album from Christine + Joey's wedding in October. It's pretty sweet :)...

The outer packaging...

There are tons of leather choices for covers...

Our albums have at least 30 (thick) pages and are library bound on the spine...

Interior spreads lay flat and photos bleed off the edges. Makes them look pretty killer...
